The Reel Never Ends · Restoring a legacy
A forgotten name.
A story that survived.
John George “Jack” Smart was there at the beginning. Now his family is bringing his name back into the story of early British cinema.
In 1919, Jack co-founded Astra Films alongside Herbert Wilcox, Charles Wilcox and Herbert Wright Thompson. His part in that history has been overlooked. The records his family preserved offer a way to look again.
Jack is the great-grandfather of Bearigo Studios co-founder Daniel Bearigo.
The Reel Never Ends opens the Smart family archive to examine what happened at Astra Films, the people involved and the consequences for Jack and his family. Documents and correspondence sit alongside photographs and family memoirs, bringing the company’s history and its human cost into the same frame.
The purpose is clear: to restore Jack’s name to the story of early British cinema and bring his legacy to a new audience.
History often remembers the loudest voices.
The surviving record deserves to be heard.
The documentary & the song
Why Jack’s Back.
The song is a musical welcome home. The documentary returns to the surviving record. Both share one purpose: to bring Jack’s name, life and legacy back into view.
Through the music and the documentary, a new audience can discover the man his family never forgot.
Herbert and Charles Wilcox were brothers. Herbert later became a celebrated British producer and director, particularly known for his films with Anna Neagle. This documentary returns to the earlier partnership and Jack’s place within it.
