01 / THE DISCOVERY

Some things were
never meant
to be found.

An island the size of Ireland appears where there should be nothing but ocean.

UNESCO sends Marcus Asher: a crisis-heritage archaeologist and former military intelligence officer, trained to record what others would rather look away from.

Beyond the glass shoreline lie cities built in the languages of civilisations that never met. The sky is wrong. The stars are unfamiliar. And an ancient warning tells the expedition to leave.

Then Asher finds his name carved into the stone.

Beneath the island, something has been waiting for a conversation.

A golden ibis-scribe symbol carved into wet black stone

THE WARNING

“Do not seek to wake them.”

Someone left a message for whoever came after.
Someone else is asking you to come closer.

02 / AN IMPOSSIBLE GEOGRAPHY

One island.
No familiar rules.

A shoreline that swallows echoes.
Cities that refuse to fit history.
A record older than writing.

03 / THE WITNESSES

They came to look.
Something looked back.

A man who records the past.
A woman who listens across it.
A god who remembers.

Marcus Asher in a mustard expedition jacket and dark beanie, carrying a field notebook

THE ARCHAEOLOGIST

Marcus Asher

A UNESCO crisis-heritage specialist with a past in military intelligence. He trusts evidence. The island asks what he will do when the evidence changes everything.

Dr Ama Osei, a Black Ghanaian woman in an olive field jacket, studying the ruins

THE LINGUIST

Dr. Ama Osei

A Ghanaian scholar of ancient languages. Where the expedition sees inscriptions, she begins to recognise a voice—and the possibility of answering it.

A suggested vast divine presence among golden ibis symbols and ancient inscription walls

THE GOD WHO REMEMBERS

Thoth

The keeper of writing, knowledge and memory. Behind the inscriptions is an intelligence older than the names humanity gave it. Patient. Awake. Listening.

The wider expedition

Dr. Yuki Tanaka

The scientist measuring what the island should not be able to do.

Jin

A security team member whose attention reaches beyond the instruments.

Nadia Strom

The journalist determined to understand the story before the world sees it.

Father Brendan Calloway

A priest carrying knowledge of a voyage that history has almost forgotten.

Colonel Elena Vasquez

The commander holding an international expedition together in unfamiliar territory.

Admiral Chen Wei

A senior Chinese representative confronting a discovery beyond national boundaries.

Dr. Harriet Blackwood

ISLAND OF LOST GODS · AN EXCERPT

The Morning
Everything Changed

The storage facility smelled of dust, diesel and a pine air freshener that had given up three weeks ago. Grease stained the concrete beneath the folding table. Before it stored recovered antiquities, the building had repaired vehicles; before that, judging by older marks on the floor, it had housed livestock. Its Ottoman brickwork made it young beside the cylinder seals Asher had come to catalogue.

He liked that kind of accidental alignment. It was one of the few satisfactions left in the job.

The cylinder seals were third millennium BCE, Akkadian, almost certainly looted from a site in the Deir ez-Zor governorate before the site itself was destroyed. He had spent twenty minutes with each one, turning them in nitrile-gloved hands, photographing them from eight angles under two different light sources, and entering their details into the UNESCO Emergency Safeguarding database with the particular care of a man who understood that for many objects he processed, this record would be the only surviving evidence they had ever existed.

He did not find this depressing. He had decided, years ago, that finding it depressing was a luxury he couldn't afford and a conclusion that wasn't useful. The objects existed. He was recording them. That was the work.
