The person behind the stories

Stories begin
with people.

I’m a British author, screenwriter and co-founder of Bearigo Studios. Today, I live on Spain’s Costa Blanca with my creative partner, Elisângela Bearigo.

I draw on the world around me: the pressures people live with, the choices they make, and the lives behind the faces we pass every day. That curiosity follows me into every story, even when imagination takes it somewhere extraordinary.

Together, Elisângela and I are building a home for our work across books, screen and sound. Her Brazilian culture, connection to ancestry and spirituality, and kindness towards strangers bring another perspective to the life and work we share.

Learning to see stories

Before the words,
there were pictures.

I was one of the last children in my class to learn to read. I was later diagnosed with dyslexia. Spelling tests could fill the whole week with dread; I remember getting up at six on Friday mornings to practise, hoping a few more words would stay with me.

But I also remember a teacher in Birmingham who saw something else. When the class wrote about their weekends, she let me draw mine as cartoons. She enjoyed the humour in them and proudly told my mum what I could do.

Those drawings were already stories. I was learning to see a weekend as a sequence of scenes, and that way of seeing has stayed with me throughout my life.

With hard work and my parents’ support, I went on to study English Literature at A Level. I still chuckle at the memory of tackling Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath when reading was already a challenge. I have rarely taken the easy route.

A place to dream

Spain called
us home.

Our travels took us through France, Germany, Italy, Albania and Greece before we made our home in Spain.

Here, between the sea and the mountains, we found space to dream. The light, the streets, the changing landscape and the people around us have become part of the texture of our days.

I bring that same attention to my writing. A place can hold a story; a small encounter can become the beginning of a character. I hope readers enjoy the way I see the world.
